Adverse drug events are unintended and harmful events resulting from medication use. They are a leading cause of emergency department visits and admissions. Prospective research enrolling over 13,000 patients in 4 BC hospitals suggests that adverse drug events account for 240,000 emergency department visits and over 80,000 admissions in BC annually. Our objective was to explore factors contributing to the development of adverse drug events, and examine preventability to develop effective preventative strategies.
