Building a Better Mousetrap: Using Information Visualization Approaches to Redesign a Diagnostic Report
As more and more public health agencies begin to implement whole genome sequencing as a tool for routine diagnostics and/or surveillance activities, there are several larger questions that need to be addressed, including “how do we best report this complex data type to our end-users”. As part of a collaboration with Public Health England, who are currently implementing genomics in their mycobacteriology reference laboratories, our team undertook a “design study” to answer this question. Using approaches drawn from the field of information visualization, we set out to design a better, more intuitive, interpretable report.
