Big Data in the Health Sector: Cautions, Concerns, Conundrums
Big data has enjoyed a big sell, particularly in the health sector. But transformations that may be involved are not all beneficial and a growing body of research has been devoted to understanding the down-side of big data in the health sector and beyond. This talk will discuss the privacy concerns that are raised by big data, as well as issues of algorithmic discrimination, due process and accountability. This session will:
- Overview the emerging critiques of big data in the health and health research sectors
- Provide an example of best practice in the application of “data ethics” to datasets of personal health information for research
